Salomon's X Alp MTN GTX Men's Mountaineering Boot isn't the footwear you'd take when pushing for Himalayan summits, but it'll more than do the job on rocky approaches, snowy ridge climbs, and glacier crossings. It forgoes a classic hard shell in favor of a light and supple nubuck leather and Cordura upper, but also packs a Gore-Tex Performance Comfort membrane for serious waterproofing and breathability, so your feet will be comfortable from step one to step bajillion. It has a flexible Mountaineering Contagrip sole, too, which provides comfort while walking on slick, rocky terrain, unlike classic stiff-soled mountaineering boots.
The X Alp is fully compatible with strap-on crampons, so you can always have extra grip when you're moving on snowy surfaces, and it's designed with a 3D Edging chassis that provides plenty of stability and edging power despite the softer sole. Salomon built in an EVA footbed and midsole, Ortholite sockliner, and foam heel padding for extra comfort and foot protection, and it included self-locking eyelets and an external heel strap to let you dial in a snug, precise, and comfortable fit. The X Alp's gusseted tongue conforms to your ankle to keep out debris and reduce pressure points, while the rubber heel and toe caps prevent discomfort from rock strikes and make sure your boot won't come apart when you really don't want it to.
